How Sounds of Spirit Works

Sounds of Spirit brings together living instruments, real-time spatial technology, psychoacoustic sound design and human presence into a single live listening experience.

Here is what actually happens within a session.

Living sound at the centre

At the centre of every Sounds of Spirit session are real acoustic instruments played live: didgeridoo, crystal bowls, gongs, voice, flutes and other resonant instruments.

Nothing is pre-recorded: every instrument is played live. Breath, touch and the acoustic response of each instrument shape the sound continuously, so no two sessions unfold in exactly the same way.

Digital layers remain present, but they support the living instruments rather than replacing them.

The didgeridoo

At the heart of Sounds of Spirit is the didgeridoo, an ancestral Aboriginal instrument from one of the world’s oldest continuous living cultures. The musician constantly reshapes the sound through breath and the vocal tract: a foundation that stays anchored while its harmonic texture keeps shifting.

Traditionally made from a eucalyptus trunk hollowed out by termites, the didgeridoo is known as yidaki among the Yolŋu people of north-east Arnhem Land.

It is played with circular breathing: the player breathes in through the nose while the cheeks keep pushing air out, so the sound never stops. This unbroken drone becomes the ground of every session, a stable centre for your attention to rest on.

Above the drone, the lips, tongue and voice bring out rhythms, overtones and animal calls, until a single tube can sound like wind, birds or a whole landscape. Its low frequencies are not only heard but felt in the body, especially in binaural sound with headphones.

Eliah Jasper has played the didgeridoo for 25 years. Yolŋu Elders of Ramingining gave him permission to play it anywhere in the world, and another Elder later authorised him to use it in healing and wellbeing work. He carries the instrument with deep respect for the culture it comes from.

Sound placed around the listener

Each acoustic instrument can be positioned and moved through the listener’s binaural field in real time.

The performance is not simply recorded first and spatialised afterward. Spatial decisions form part of the live performance.

This is why headphones are required and why listening through ordinary speakers produces a fundamentally different experience.

An evolving psychoacoustic layer

Around the living instruments sits SOS Resonant Pulse Technology, SOS RPT.

It combines evolving amplitude modulation, multi-rate pulse interaction, controlled frequency movement, harmonic relationships, binaural relationships and spatial motion.

These elements can support shifts in attention, bodily settling, inward absorption, open awareness, calm focus or greater activation.

SOS RPT is not built around one fixed frequency and does not claim that a particular rate forces every listener into a predetermined brain state.

Performed, not played back

A live performer is not simply reproducing a fixed piece.

Sounds of Spirit is shaped through decisions about when to introduce sound, when to let it build, when to simplify and when silence says more than another note.

This is holding space: a practiced way of remaining present with what is unfolding. It is part of the architecture of the experience.

Intention gives the experience direction

Every session begins with a clear intention, carried through the way it is performed, held and paced.

Intention does not replace the acoustic or technological design. It gives the experience direction, influencing what is played, how the performance develops and how the space is held.

The listener completes the experience

No two people receive a session in exactly the same way.

Each participant brings a different body, nervous system, emotional context, history and quality of attention into the experience.

Some people experience the sessions as deeply relaxing, restorative, regulating or healing. Others encounter shifts in attention, embodiment, perception or inner state.

Sounds of Spirit creates conditions that support these personal processes without prescribing one result.

One coherent field

Living instruments, real-time spatial sound, SOS Resonant Pulse Technology, presence, intention, environment and participant do not operate separately.

Together, they form the integrated method called The SOS Coherent Field. SOS RPT is the technological layer within that field. The Coherent Field is the whole relationship.
